Inspired by the hit motion picture of the same name, the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation was formed in 1996 by composer Michael Kamen. The foundation was formed to provide support to struggling music programs in the form of new and refurbished instruments, as well as repairs on existing instruments. The foundation has donated over $4.2 million in instruments to deserving music programs since it’s inception.

Recently, the Foundation has shown special interest in helping the Gulf Coast area rebuild from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Many music programs lost most or all of their instruments to the storms and flooding. A special fund has been created specifically to help the area, and has given over $1 million so far.
